This page is a resource for determining when to call Memphis Door and Hardware. Listed below are some common problems that require a certain level of expertise to repair. If you need help with any of the issues below, contact us today at 901-755-1370 or fill out our simple form.

A: Unfortunately, we hear this daily. The wise decision would be to replace the floor and install a new door unit as soon as possible, before more damage occurs. Pictured: A big box store installed a new door unit, twice (see damage in pic). Both were poor installations that drained the utilities, rotted the floor, rotted the door, and threw a bunch of money out the window. This unit required a full door replacement three times, plus the entire entry hall floor on the last install.

Rotted Floor

A: We recommend replacement. Patched work could mask surface problems while undermining the integrity of the entire wall. When water invades the windowsill, the internal seal can fog and etch, causing mold and mildew to form. If the internal wall rots it will cost much more than replacing a window to resolve the situation, so your best bet is to completely replace your windowsills at the first signs of rot.

Rotted Window Sill

A: Hire the right person to install a new door. Repairing a door once it has become this dilapidated will only cost you more in the long run. The door pictured here was only two years old and was a total loss. These big box store doors were “pre-fabricated,” very expensive, and not built to survive the humid conditions of Memphis and the Mid-South. The kickplates trap water and bacteria that deteriorate and rot the door. The compression style threshold (common with less experienced installers) wouldn't allow for a tight seal. The door obviously leaked and needed to be replaced.

Water Damage to Door

A: Call immediately. If we replace the problem area quickly we can prevent additional water issues. You'd like to avoid replacing the door itself and especially any interior tiles, floorboards, or sidelites damaged from poor water protection.

BEWARE: DO NOT ALLOW SCAMMERS TO “SPLICE” A NEW PIECE INTO THE ROTTEN AREA. IT WILL NOT WORK.

Door Jam Rotting

A: Quick response is key. We can extract, replace, and install a new panel if we address the issues before additional damage occurs. Any area next to a rotting door jam, sidelite, or door is vulnerable.

BEWARE: DO NOT ALLOW SCAMMERS TO “PATCH” THE AREA OR INSTALL METAL FLASHING. THIS WILL TRAP WATER AND INFLICT FURTHER DAMAGE.

A: Very! Every new door should be inspected and retreated within the first two years of ownership. Let's schedule your follow up appointment once you've chosen your new door.

A: It really depends on the material and the manufacturer. We have great relationships with large door manufacturers that can recreate high-quality popular trends for less. We can also customize every aspect of your door for one of kind aesthetics at a higher cost.

A:  It's really up to your own personal style, taste, and budget. We can coordinate a common theme just as easily as designing unique elements for each door. The choice is yours.

A: Yes. We'll come out and measure the dimensions and give you a few choices of material for your new door. We can find pretty much any kind of wood commonly used in door making. We're confident we can recreate the original and even upgrade the look of your home.

A: A pre-hung door is self-contained. It is already hanging within an existing doorframe. A slab door is unattached and requires hinges and a separate frame. We can install either for you.
